Episode 11 in my series Bands who have impeccable taste and take pride in their album artwork
Let’s start the new year off right with Priest. Priest is sick. If you don’t believe me, watch Heavy Metal Parking Lot, the greatest fifteen minute movie of all times. Not only can Halford sing like a lark, but KK Downing and Glenn Tipton hold down the fort on the guitar front. Beavis and Butthead love them. This is probably due to the fact that their videos are some of the most entertaining I have ever seen (see: Hot Rockin for the gay workout video action and Headin out to the Highway for awesome set design).
Priest has gone thru many changes in their time. They start out as a hippie jam band…not really, but they looked like a bunch of dirty, thieving hippies. The album Rocka Rolla (which is what I wanna name my roller rink…Investors?) came out during this period. I really like this cover art even though it is minimal. It’s probably because of the play on Coca Cola, my favorite drink.
In the latter half of the seventies and early eighties, they decided to ditch the chiffon dashikis and put on some leather. And I’m not just talking pants, i’m talking full throttle leather ensembles. They looked like hesh cops that were into S&M. This is when the other three albums came out in this order: British Steel, Point of Entry and Screaming for Vengeance.
These covers are classic. The hand holding the razor. The depth of field. The technical, graphic eagle thing. I actually have a sick, original Screaming for Vengeance tour shirt. Do I also have to mention the killer Judas Priest font? I don’t think I do.
